Urban Beekeeping: Opening a Beehive

Recently I had the privilege to witness the opening of a beehive by my good friend, Joe Provenzano, in Annanndale, Virginia. Joe has been raising bees in his backyard for a few years and hopes to eventually harvest some honey. These particular bees are a mix of Italian and Carniolan. On the left is the beehive. On the right is the smoker that is used to calm the bees: Beehive Smoker The entry to the beehive: Beenhive Entry Some bees attached to the inside lid of the beehive: Bees One of the frames gently lifted out of the beehive: Frame Closeup of capped honey cells: Bees
